The land that makes up the modern UAE has an immensely long history of human settlement. From the earliest Stone Age inhabitants some 200,000 years ago, to the creation of the modern state, this gallery charts the rich archaeology and history of the region.
Visitors will encounter monumental tombs and towers, explore magnificent jewellery and sculpture, discover locally produced objects such as soft-stone vessels, and journey with Emirati navigators and traders along routes that eventually encompassed the globe. Immersive displays will highlight the lives of the inhabitants of the UAE over this vast stretch of time.
Impressive archaeological material will reflect key periods of cultural unity in which the region flourished and played a major part in the development of Middle Eastern civilisations. Sheikh Zayed recognised the importance of such unity and, drawing on model states of the past, he led the UAE to federation and established the country as a significant player on the global stage.
